Cool Toys Pic of the day – Scoop.it
P2P Web Resources

Scoop.it:
www.scoop.it/

Scoop.it says, "Be The Curator of Your Favorite Topic!" Now I know
that certain folk will be seriously annoyed by the degradation and
misuse of the word "curator", but for now, I am setting that aside and
taking the phrase as it is intended in contemporary common parlance.

The idea of Scoop.it seems similar in some ways to Paper.li, but with
significantly more control on the part of the editor / curator. With
Paper.li, you are configuring a collection of interesting people and
hashtags, then through some magic of its own, Paper.li automatically
generates a daily "paper." Don’t get me wrong – I enjoy MANY of my
friends’ Paper.li collections, and wish I had more time to explore
them. However, with Scoop.it (and I don’t have an invite yet, so this
is making guesses from what I see on the site), the selection is
weighted more towards the choices of the human editor.

I remember when librarians received professional publication credit
for making annotated bibliographies. Now we generate similar products
and don’t get the same kind of credit for them — LibGuides, social
bookmarking collections, Tweeting, and much more. Scoop.it is a
flashier, more engaging, more graphic & visual tool for creating these
types of selected and aggregated products on a theme or topic. Very
interesting. Not only for librarians, but also for teachers working
with students on issues of critical thinking, defining authority and
credibility of resources, selection, and similar aspects of academic
thought and practice. Pretty good stuff, and a potentially VERY useful
tool!

Howard Rheingold and Robin Good both seem to think Scoop.it is their
new favorite tool, which definitely caught my attention!

Here is Howard’s take on Smart Mobs news:
